Apple’s foldable iPhone and iPads
The demand for foldable phones has been increased in the last couple of years. While Samsung and a bunch of other smartphone manufacturers are currently dominating the foldable phone segment, Apple is reportedly working on a flip iPhone alongside a foldable iPad.
According to a new report by The information, the the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on ‘at least two’ Galaxy Z Flip-styled iPhones. However, Apple seems to have no plans to mass-produce theses devices in 2024 or 2025, meaning we might have to wait at least two years before the company unveils its first foldable device.
The report claims that Apple wants to create a foldable iPhone with an external screen, but engineers working on the project are struggling to do so because it can break easily. It goes on to suggest that the company wants to make a foldable phone that is ‘as this as current iPhone models’, but is reportedly hitting a roadblock as components like battery and display add to the thickness of the device.
Apple also seems to have talked to ‘at least one’ part maker in Asia to procure components for foldable iPhone of different sizes. hinting that the teach giant is experimenting with more than one foldable device.
As it turns out, a foldable iPhone is not the only device that is currently under development. The tech giant might also be working on the much-anticipated folding iPad, which according to the report will be the same size as the current generation iPad Mini with an 8-inch display. It looks like Apple engineers aer trying to reduce the crease that appears at the center of every foldable phone and are working on a hinge that allows the device to lie flat when it is unfolded.
While it is still unclear if and when Apple plans to unveil the foldable iPhone and iPad, a recent report hints that or the year after that.
In the last few years, Apple has filed several patents which indicate that the tech giant was working actively working on a foldable phone and tablet. The earliest patent for a foldable iPhone was filed back in 2016, which described an iPhone with a full-screen foldable screen. It suggested that the company planned to use several flexible components and a design that allowed users to access both halves of the display when the phone was shut.
Four years later, the Cupertino-based tech giant was granted another patent with a unique hinge design that used movable flaps which prevented the display from getting damaged or creased when in folded state. A few months later, another patent named ‘Hybrid overlay/window structure for flexible display applications’ suggested that Apple might consider using a hard coat layer that prevents the screen from being cracked on its curved, foldable and flexible modules.
